NO SEAMS
This collection takes on other disciplines, such as industrial design,
packaging, and interior design to produce a way of constructing
garments were NO SEAMS ARE USED. It's about creating shapes in
a whole different way; putting aside archaic stitching and sewing,
exploring the qualities of the fabrics, and other ways they can be
assembled together. Many contemporary artists such as Leonardo
Drew and Oliver Arms are going back to the experimentation of
these techniques by forcing the laws of the materials.
Contemporary packaging uses paper without glue to create interesting
packages that are more eco-friendly than the ones that use glue
or other substances to create these shapes. To apply this idea into
fabric, we just have to find the type of fabric that will stay folded
crisp together without sewing it, and maybe even reinforcing it with
the iron or the ancient starch.

Garments needs closures, and there are existing ones that donʼt
need stitching, such as grommets, snap buttons, braids and knots.
These techniques could not only be used as a way of closing but also
to create shapes.
One of the biggest challenges of this project is how to have a clean
finish without using stitches. One technique that has been used by so
many disciplines is the laser cut. This precise method can create very
complex cutout patterns of extremely thin fabrics without the need to
finish its edges. This method is perfect to finish the edges of the
fabrics that threads easily.

Pasarela Internacional de Jóvenes Diseñadores de Vigo

The designer Almudena Alcaide is presenting her new collection “Dreams and Reflections” in the Pasarela de Jóvenes Diseñadores de Vigo (Vigo's Novel Designers Runway) from October 30th to November 1st 2009. This collection is inspired by a revealing dream where she was climbing up and down dunes and everything had a golden tone to it. Her surprise was when she found out that the designer and friend Andrea Carandini made a collage with out knowing about her dream that resemble exactly the esthetic of it. She has also taken influences on a trip to Istambul including fabrics that she bought over there. The rest of the fabrics are high quality silks, organic cottons and hand dyed lace.
